Most Web Design firms try to dazzle you with a lot of technical jargon about their capabilities.

I will give you a show and tell about what makes a good web site, and what draws people to it, and prevents them from leaving once they are there.

The Home page must load very fast.

When a person clicks on a link to your page it should load onto their web browser in 5 to 10 seconds. If it takes longer people will tend to surf off to another site in their search list. Some designers put a lot of graphics, pictures, video, and sound that load very slowly, but look great if anybody waits to see it. This kind of design is ok for succeeding pages once the person is committed to surfing your site.

The Home page must contain all the words and phrases one would use to search for a site like yours.

The webs search engines scan the first few lines of text on the page and use this to apply their search technique. It should also contain links to similar sites as yours.

After the page loads, a statement that sells and explains your product or service should be visible without having to scroll down the page.

This statement is the key to keeping a person from surfing away to another site.

How to add several pictures without slowing down the home page.

This is accomplished using a large picture "thumbnail" that shows a representative picture of a group of pictures. If the person wants to see the group of pictures he can click on the thumbnail picture and a new page opens and loads all the pictures of the group. This of course will take some time to load, but the initial loading of the home page remains fast. Click on the picture of the car to the left and see how it works! Notice that the thumbnail picture and the others are now shown as large full sized pictures, of course it takes considerable time to load the full page. There is also a link back to the design page at the bottom of the last picture.
